The small-budget TikTok
ads playbook

Under A$2,000 a month and still want TikTok to work? It's possible — but the playbook changes: fewer tests, tighter creative discipline, and an honest answer about when to walk away.

TikTok's own reps will tell you the platform needs A$50/day minimum to exit learning. That's true — and it means a A$1,500 budget has room for exactly one campaign and one idea at a time. The small-budget game isn't a scaled-down version of the big one; it's a different game.

Rule one: creative volume over audience cleverness

With limited spend you can't afford a testing campaign and a scaling campaign — so the testing happens inside one campaign by rotating creative weekly. Six hooks per cycle, evaluated on 3-second hold rate first, CTR second, CPA third.

Rule two: shoot for the feed, not the brand book

Polished brand spots die on TikTok at any budget, but small budgets die faster because there's no spend to brute-force weak creative. Phone-shot UGC, talking-head demos, green-screen commentary — the formats that look like posts are the formats that convert like posts.

  • Hook in first 1.5 seconds or the video doesn't exist.
  • One message per video — feature lists are for carousels.
  • Captions on everything; most of the feed watches muted.

Rule three: know when TikTok isn't the channel

If your product needs education before purchase, has a tiny total addressable market, or sells at a price where the buyer thinks for a week — TikTok's job is cheap reach for remarketing pools, not direct sales. Sometimes the honest answer is that A$1,500 works harder on Google.

On TikTok, a small budget isn't a handicap — it's a filter. It forces you to make only the ads that can win.

We run exactly this playbook on our Pilot tier — six hooks, one campaign, weekly rotation. If your product fits the feed, we'll find out in a month.

In one breath
  • One campaign, rotating creative — no split testing lane
  • 6 hooks per cycle, judged on 3-sec hold rate
  • Feed-native formats only
  • Sometimes the right answer is a different channel

People also ask

About A$1,500/mo gets one campaign out of learning phase reliably. Below that you're paying for data that never accumulates enough to optimise — at that point organic TikTok or boosting proven organic posts is smarter.

Not necessarily paid ones — founder-led and staff-shot content often outperforms creator content at small scale because it's faster to iterate. The format matters more than who's in it.

Watch leading indicators: if 3-second hold rate is under 25% after two creative cycles, the creative is the problem. If hold rate is fine but CTR is dead, the offer or product-market fit is. Six weeks of clean testing usually answers the question.
